The Australian Terrier

History

The Australian Terrier was created from a number of terrier breeds (the Cairn, Skye, Dandie Dinmont, Yorkshire and the Manchester Terrier) in the middle of the last century. These dogs were used for destroying vermin and rodents, as well as as guard dogs.

Exterior

The height at the withers is around 27 cm and the weight is approximately 7 kg. The Aussie has a double coat, ie a soft undercoat and a harsh outer coat, which must be plucked a minimum of twice a year. The two breed colours are sandy or red, and black and tan. The Aussie coat must be trimmed.

Character

The Aussie is friendly, stubborn, playful, loyal and alert.

Special features

Suitable for life in the town but needs plenty of excercise. Coat care consists of a good brushing twice a week and a trim at least twice a year. Can sometimes be a bit dominant towards other dogs.
