Various types of Pedigrees

A pedigree is a proof of ancestry - no more, no less. The STC promotes the registration and breeding of dogs with pedigrees - and is the only Club in Holland which is recognised by both the Dutch Kennel club and the FCI.

NL SWEDEN CZECH REP. FRANCE

Look out for the FCI logo on these pedigrees - it means you can take part in FCI-approved international activities such as World Shows or Crufts.

NON-FCI APPROVED PEDIGREE
NL + Belgium + Germany

Look out for the UCI logo on this pedigree - you CANNOT take part in FCI organised activities. You may perhaps be able to participate in UCI activities, if they exist. The ERV pedigree in the middle does not even have a logo or contact details of the issuing authority. The ECC pedigree on the right even uses a Scot as part of their logo. The STC regards dogs with an UCI/ERV/ECC pedigree as non-pedigree dogs.

There are also breeders who produce their own pedigrees - nowadays, these can look extremely professional and genuine, but are not FCI-recognised. Always request to see the pedigrees of the sire and dam if you are buying a puppy, and have the seller confirm in writing what sort of pedigree you will receive.

Since an FCI pedigree costs around € 50 (2003), it is implausible for a breeder to reduce the price by hundreds of Euro's because you do not require an official pedigree - you may not be purchasing the pedigree dog you think you are.
